With science constantly progressing, how will we know our rules and everything that we know will stand up to the testing. What if one day, everything that we know will be questioned and all the laws of physics will be a thing of our imagination. Can we be certain that we are actually who we think we are? What if we were all computer generated? What if everyone and everything is all just our individual imagination and that the year really isn’t 2015 and we don’t live on planet Earth, located in the Milky Way galaxy. How can we be so certain that what we experience is actual reality? Could it be possible that everything that we believe is reality is actually our imagination? What if when we die, we actually wake up in the “real” reality? A paragraph from the book Adventures in Science really stood out to me. In your argument with Don Salmon you argued, “I realize that you have already shown your guiding metaphysic when you cited a passage from Krishna Prem, “it should be clear from introspective meditation that all forms are sustained in consciousness, and that, apart from consciousness, we know nothing and can know nothing of forms. It is in fact meaningless to talk of forms of existing apart from consciousness. The objects supposed by some to exist behind the forms are mere mental constructs devised for dealing with experience in practice. No one knows them, no one can ever know them; to believe in their existence is a pure . . . act of faith””
The reason for my question of reality comes from the thought of the future and the role of computational/artificial intelligence. What if we are already in the future? How would we know we that everything we know isn’t just computer simulated and everything that happens is “all in our heads”? Could it be possible that our “consciousness” is contained in a computer and that our physical body is elsewhere? To illustrate, one day, we will die. When we die, we will go through a, what would perceive, tunnel and into the light. As we pass the light, we would wake up in containment tubes and we will be greeted by robots. They will explain to us that we are in the future. The not too distant future actually. The year is 2025 and we learn that we have somewhat created a way to keep people alive forever. Although no one is born anymore due to over population of Earth, everyone that is perceived as having potential to benefit the world is kept alive. We learn that as we are on the verge of death, our mind is uploaded to a powerful computer and we are again “reborn” in our minds as the computers and that those that are “awake” create a new body for our mind. Humans cycle from being “dead” and “alive” when those that die go into the computer simulation, we are being tend to by those that are still “alive”. Everyone that we think we know is all part of our imagination. Everything that we learn growing up is something that we already know and we are just reminded by our imagination. For example, the people we perceive as our parents and teachers are nothing but imagination. We are in a state of holding. Time is no longer an issue and this creates progress in science and humanity. We literally have an infinite amount of time to discover and imagine all the possible ways to create a better humanity. When we wake up from our “sleep” and emerge into the real world, we use what we learn to create a better humanity. Like Gene Ivash said, “Logic will get you from A to Z, but imagination will get you everywhere”. We are reminded to try every possibility our imagination can come up with and that is where progression will come from.
