Science, which is the basis for many biologists’ thinking, is rooted in verifying a hypothesis with well thought out observations and evidence to determine its validity. With that being said, most biologists are akin to finding evolution by natural selection to be more persuasive than intelligent design or creationism because through observation and scientific inquiry, there is more sound and verifiable evidence for the process of natural selection. Most people are familiar with Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection by observation of finches and their differing beak sizes based on their food availability, but many do not consider this evidence and the multiple other forms of evidence as sufficient for the theory of evolution, which is mainly due to their religious beliefs and diversion from scientific thinking.
Intelligent design and creationism are still popular in America because unlike in science, many religions and religious leaders are not open to being wrong. The basis of science is going back and always evaluating what we know and trying to make it better by essentially proving older theories wrong. This common notion of being able to debunk old theories to accommodate new, more relevant, and better supported theories is the basis of science which is lacking in religion because religion is often based in the word of god which probably isn’t going and hasn’t changed for a long time. In religion, primarily Christianity it is customary to believe what you are told without questioning the basis of the content if it is the word of god. It’s normal and customary in the realm of religion to go without questioning the story of creationism even if there is so much evidence against it because that would be defying the word of god. It is difficult to admit that you are wrong or that there is a better theory that explains the evolution and emergence of man when you have poured your faith into a certain religion and that god.
Doing a quick Google search on creationism will quickly show you that creationism is deeply rooted in Christianity and questioning the origins of creationism would be questioning god. Biologists on the other hand, are accustomed to questioning everything and are maybe even too skeptical to try and improve on theories that could be the basis of our understanding of creationism and natural selection because that is the basis of science, which is the field that biologists relate to most. In America, creationism and intelligent are still prevalent because America was founded on Christianity; it has been passed down by generations and traditions that are not easily broken or questioned by those who are faithful to the religion. Although there is more scientific proof for natural selection, if people put more faith in god than in science, there will obviously be more faith in their religion, which is the reason why the ideas of creationism and intelligent design are still around today. Traditions and customs are not easily broken and the views of people can hopefully only one day be changed by education and the upcoming of even more sound evidence.
