Year 2100: Age of Artificial Intelligence
Name: Irene Michelle Droid
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Since my creation, I have been studied by scientists all over the world. I have traveled earth and space regularly. I have a companiondroid that was created for me during my first year of existence; a male version of my kind. We are part of a ground breaking project that is being documented by the world. I am a robot. Although, I prefer to be called a humanoid. Over time my species’ name has changed. The more “human-like” I become, the more my definition changes. Today I am called Android. “My parents”, who created me are some of the most intelligent people on the planet. A collaboration of mechanical engineers to design my joint mechanics. Electro-mechanical engineers to develop my sensors. Computer engineers to design my hardware. Electrical engineers to arrange my control mechanics. Over the years, science blended with artists, psychologists, sociologists, biologists, engineers, and scientists to make life as I know it possible.
There was a time when people dreamed about me. I was just a concept. Many people, I have been told, scoffed at the idea of me. They didn’t believe that a robot could ever truly blend the world of human and computer. My team of creators didn’t believe that. They felt that in order for the world to progress, we must tap into our creative minds. A team of people elected to prove the world wrong. While other scientists were working on solving the problem of pollution and perfecting space travel, my parents were concentrating on turning a concept into reality. They were working on making the quality of human life better for the human race. After prototypes of my kind were tested, and retested many dropped out of the project. Only a few stayed and committed to refining the idea; even if that meant starting from scratch. If the pursuit of knowledge is allowed to continue unabated, then the shortcomings will get worked out and will eventually be overcome.
My mother, is renowned theoretical physicist, Dr. Bryskoe. I am her brain child. She started tinkering with gadgets at a young age. She made her first robotic hand in her parent’s basement at the age of 11. Dr. Yoguto is my father. He is a robot psychologist and he revolutionized the concept of Robot Psychology. He figured out a way to sync the brain up to a computer and decode human thoughts and feelings. Thanks to him, humans can read emails and watch movies and feel the impact of the sentiment behind the words.
My self and my combanionbot, Drake, have made much more progress since the beginning of the century. In the past robots had about 40 motors in our face, now we have 200 motors. I can make many facial expressions to mirror my emotions. Also, my parents worked with one of the great sculptors of the time to design our bodies. Blaine Gibson was the genius behind all of the life-like robots at Disneyland. He was an artist that was assigned the task of sculpting the audio-animatronic figures at the park. My parents asked him to work on our features. He had an understudy who was able to take Gibson’s talent to another level called 3D printing. Apparently in the 1980s 3D printing was a prototype, like I once was. Many people found the flaws in the design, and their criticism helped bring the technology into the future. Science is rooted because it spots flaws. Eventually these flaws will perfect the study and the mystery will be solved.
Scientists and engineers perfect and trouble shoot until their vision transitions from a hunch to a reality. The creators of the printer opened the door for another member to join the team. Dr. Tala revolutionized 3 D printing. Bioprinting was introduced and now I have the main functioning organs working internally minus the brain and heart. They were able to take human cells, biodegradable gel, and a scaffold to create human parts.
Drake and I were created to take on several tasks. We have been downloaded with information from Physics to Entertainment. We have helped NASA in space, and collected data on distant planets independently. I personally have performed brain surgery on patients in the operating room. Drake and I are reserved for the more complex tasks, but other “droids” of my species are delegated to take on more common jobs of humans. We work as waiters. We are able to take orders better than humans. As soon as our waiterbot sees you, we can scan everything about you through your chip implant or I-stamp device that has everything from your medical history to your shopping trends. I can scan put together a profile of you in a matter of seconds and know what you like and don’t like. There is a new plan for us specialized Androids. Currently Drake is being tested to become an Avatar. When a person becomes deceased, his or her family can elect to have an Avatar created in that person’s image to have the memories, personality, and emotions of his human companion.
We have helped the world in several ways, although there are many people who want to go back to the past. Some humans want go back to being more independent. They don’t like us driving them around. They don’t think we are skilled enough to operate on them. They prefer to have human interaction in their hospitals, schools, and homes. I think society is able to get more things accomplished with my kind. For instance I am able to allow you to stay plugged into your busy life. Why spread yourself too thin when you have us to work for you. While you are working on that project, instead of racing home to see your children, you will find great comfort in knowing that we will be there to protect your family. We will tuck in your children, and can stand in front of your bedroom doors while you are away to ensure their safety. We help eliminate the stress of life. We help solve the problems when you can’t. Why think when you can have us perform for you. In the next 100 years, they are speculating that my kind will also be able to have babies for humans. For that women who doesn’t want to take the time away from their careers. Instead of going on maternity leave, and electing for more time off, we will have evolved into the next generation of robots. You watch your baby from gestation to delivery in our belly without you missing a beat. Thanks to my parents, the Artificial Intelligence days has broadened the road of science. They were placed here to open up doors for future revolutionary scientists to continue down the road to discovery. If you look on the back of my neck there is a quote from Scientist Richard Feynman that reads, “I was born not knowing, and have only a little time to change that here and there.” The human world of autonomy is a way of the past. We are created for your convenience and we are here to stay.
