When posed with a question on why humanity exists today, the most common response that one is likely to hear in America on our existence is that God or some other intelligent, all-powerful entity made it so. In fact, that is the response one should expect to receive from a great deal of the population since the settlement of America and what now is today the United States, where freedom of religion continues to be practiced by many without restrictions. The public so generally accepts the answer of God being responsible for our existence, but when that response drifts, that the reason we exist is because hundreds and hundreds of years of evolution made it so, disapproval is immediately met.
Intelligent design reigning popularity in America can be traced back to when America was fist settled in, many of which whom settled coming for the purpose of freedom of their religious practices. However, that alone is not the only reason intelligent design continues to remain popular today despite the advancements and discoveries in science field. Family, culture, and tradition plays a great importance in passing down religion and other beliefs and ideas of creationism that, by the time a higher form of science is taught and can be understood, deviating from the belief of a greater entity becomes unlikely. Many other factors such as fear of disapproval and rejection from family and fear of the unknown itself strengthens the credibility of intelligent design than of science, making the idea of any type of evolution to be faulty.
Men and women of science, however, would disagree on that. Biologists over the years have made grand discoveries and connections that evolution did in fact take place. Biologist practice a science that is derived from theories and evidence, the remains of Lucy, an early australopithecine, greatly supports the theory of evolution, her skeleton presenting evidence of a bipedal walking gait and a smaller skull that deviates away from that of an ape’s large one. Evidence that shows this type of evolution is reason why a majority of biologist find evolution by natural selection to be much more plausible than intelligent design. The latter depicters natural selection to be deliberate and to occur at certain points in time when it fact natural selection occurs on its own and without deliberate means to furthering evolution.
Charles Darwin’s study on finches in the Galàpagos Islands is another example of natural selection at work and evolution occurring before our very eyes. During the study, Darwin noticed a difference in beak variations of the finch population and, after recording and returning to the island after a drought affected the island, the new generation of finches had a beak size both bigger and thicker to better equipment them for survival. While an intelligent entity may have put us and all that live on earth with no actual proof of challenging its existence, biologist are able to use events like droughts and remains to prove the credibility of evolution and that it does and continues to occur.
Individuals are faced with many different beliefs that they may choose to accept or deny in their lifetime. One may choose to favour beliefs of a greater entity than of theories, often times people find comfort in having the thought that there is a being responsible for their safety than of discovering truths that may not have been exposed to at a young age. There is a bandwagon approach when it comes to intelligent design and so long as it continues to be popular, the chances of science conquering over will remain slim.
