Ever since the beginning of time mankind has pondered their place is the Universe and how we came to be. We have always believed that we were created by the hands of a higher power; Through Divine Intervention if you will. Almost every culture in the world has a story of genesis. From the Aztecs to the Egyptians to the modern day Judeo/Christian/Muslim religions. It wasn't until relatively recently that we were offered a new idea; Natural Selection. This was an idea proposed by the scientist Charles Darwin.
Now Darwin was not the first to explain evolution. This is something that has widely been mistaken. The first to propose a theory of Evolution was actually Lamark(1744-1829). He proposed an idea of inheritance through acquired characteristics. His idea stated if a giraffe needed to get higher food it's neck would grow. Therefore allowing it to reach the food and this giraffe would pass this trait down to it's offspring. This is half true(The first part about acquired characteristics). Now Darwin on the other hand came up with this idea of natural selection. Darwin's theory stated that Individuals vary and these variations are inherited. Populations within a species produce more offspring than the environment can support so competition is fierce. Individuals with favorable variation are likely to leave more offspring therefore allowing their species to survive. Now favorable variation has to do with traits that better equip an individual to survive in it's environment. For example a bunny with white fur that lives in the snow can better camouflage an hide from predators therefore is better suited for survival. Now explaining natural selection In simpler terms; Nature selects what traits shall be passed down to the next generation(i.e. Finches on the Galapagos Islands). This is an idea that is widely accepted by a vast majority of individuals; Including religious individuals. People agree with this theory due to it's sensible idea of how we came to be. Many people are physical beings, meaning they like to have tangible evidence in order for them to believe something and this theory does just that for them.
Now on the other hand we have people who believe that we came about through the process of intelligent design. This is the notion that we were created by a higher power commonly referred to as God. Now there has been a huge debate as to whether or not this falls under the category of real science due to the fact that it does not follow the tools of science. Mainly the idea that it is not testable and it is not falsifiable. They seem to clash with evolutionists. They see their views as just random occurrences of events and does not give specific timelines as to when these changes actually took place. One of the biggest supporters of Intelligent Design is Rev. William Paley. He published a book known as the Natural Theory. This book is a religious explanation to the world that assumes the existence of a supernatural force that is responsible for the greatest complexity of life on earth today; meaning our creation. This idea is widely accepted as well. Most people grow up in a household where we were born into a religion and as children this was all we knew. It is hard to throw away an ideology that you've held dear for years and years.
This debate between evolution and Inteligent Design has always existed since the theory of evolutions inception and it will continue. People are more drawn to the idea of evolution due to it's validity and it's proof. Where as with Inteligent Design offers no proof to it's views.
