I, actually think its kind of funny to see cars driving with a fish sticker, later to be followed by a fish with feet sticker, and then a bigger (shark-like), fish eating the smaller fish with feet. What are all these stickers? Are we trying to convince each other of one versus the other? The sticker of the fish is a symbol of the Christian faith and the fish with the feet is a symbol for the Darwin fish. It is an ongoing battle over which is right. This is not only an ongoing battle amongst fish but among some biologists and in the America as a whole.
One of the reasons biologists find evolution by natural selection to be more persuasive than creationism, is because evolution (or natural selection), helps provide answers to questions that exist in biology. Intelligent Design is not considered a science because for the most part, ‘Intelligent’ assumes its God. Intelligent Design does focus on the natural world and its diversity. It also talks about its designer but never reveals who the designer is. Science requires hypothesis and experiments to test theories. However, because we don’t know anything about this designer, we have no one to test.
In Professor Lane’s video Evolution Trilogy, Francis Clark is quoted as saying, “A knowledge of the true age of the earth and of the fossil record makes it impossible for any balanced intellect to believe in the literal truth of every part of the bible in the way that fundamentalists do.” Now a biologist clearly has more knowledge and has done more research in the field than a non-biologist. Thus it makes me wonder, if the more I learn and educate myself makes me belief in something that is concrete, rather than based on a belief system (which can’t be tested and proven), than why wouldn’t a biologist find evolution more persuasive than creationism? Evolution and Darwin’s discoveries are much more relevant today than they were when he first came across them because of the rediscovery of the unknown! In Professor Lane’s The Unknowable he states, “We don’t know what a single thing is. We don’t know where we are. And we don’t know who or what is actually living us. We live in a mystery, even if we act as if nothing is mysterious.”
Now given all this concrete information, why is creationism still popular today? Humans need a purpose. We need something to belong to and need to understand the whys. Creationism offers a set of morals or rules to live by, given these morals then I would argue that it takes away personal responsibility. Especially in the case of Catholicism where they preach that everything is okay after attending confession. Creationism also instills fears in what after death looks like. Lastly creationism is popular because it is much easier to say, “The bible says…” than it is to have concrete evidence. For example Pastor Peter La Fuffa, who says that if the bible said 2+2 = 5 then he would make every effort to believe that was so, simply because, “the bible said.”
