When I hear the word paranormal, I usually think of ghosts. For example, apparitions and poltergeists are things we often think about when we hear the word ghosts. There are many stories, photos, and even videos of seemingly unexplainable things. Most people hear stories about ghost and are usually in old hotels or cemeteries or dark backroads in the middle of the night. A common story that I hear a lot is ghosts in rooms that have a significant number on a specific floor for example, room 666 on floor 13. There are many videos on Youtube that shows apparitions around these certain rooms. Another example that is common is the “hitchhiking ghost” these ghosts are typically found on back roads that usually don’t have too much traffic going through and usually involves a female ghost that targets men. Poltergeists are another form of ghosts, but are much more active. Videos revolving around these usually show chairs moving on their own, rattle door knobs, slamming doors, and are usually seemingly angry. How much truth is there to all of these stories of people “seeing” ghosts or how real are these videos or photographs? Quite a few of the stories are exaggerated or are perceived as much more than it really is. Photographs of ghosts typically show a blur or white blob floating in the background. There are hardly any pictures that clearly show a ghost. These white blobs or blurs can simply be explained with a dirty lens or mistakes when processing the photos. I believe a lot of these ghost sightings and photos of ghosts are our minds playing tricks on us. We see things that we want to believe is there.
When I was younger, I experienced what people know as “ghost press”. This is when you are lying in bed and you cannot move although you are awake as if something is holding you down. Often before people get ghost pressed, they sense a presence in the room with them. I hear many stories of people seeing dark figures in a corner of the room or sometimes dark shadows approaching their faces. I have also heard stories that you can see the ghost on top of you in reflections. For example, a friend of mine has a closet mirror and his bed is next to the mirror so you can see him and his reflection on the mirror. One night, he was woken up in the middle of the night and he noticed he couldn’t move. He starts to panic and as he looks over to the mirror, he sees a terrifying ghost on top of him and as he finally regained control of his body, the ghost disappears. My experience was somewhat similar to his, but I didn’t have a mirror in my room therefor I wasn’t able to see any ghost on top of me. Ghosts press is a sleeping disorder called sleep paralysis. This happens when our mind “wakes up” before our body. During the REM stage of our sleep, we release a chemical that in sense paralyzes our body so we don’t act out our dreams. We usually “see” things because we are half dreaming still. Personally, I do believe in some ghost stories because I have also experienced things that I cannot exactly explain. Although I cannot explain them, doesn’t mean there isn’t a logical explanation to them.
