Since the official discovery of computers, we have come a very long way in a short amount of time in how advanced—and even how compact—we have built computers. Computers now can be plugged into the wall and kept as personal at home computers but not only that, they can be folded and taken wherever we please as our own personal laptops or even fit securely in our pockets as well as a way of communicating with others at a distance. Technology has helped humans in more ways than we realize it and, for that, we have made incredible advancements in the medical field, thus helping in improving life style and health. Just recently, a patient who has been paralyzed for more than a decade will soon be able to feel again thanks to a prosthetic program developed by DARPA. The prosthetic is controlled by the user’s thoughts with electrodes placed onto the sensory cortex, allowing for the user to feel pressure when the prosthetic comes in contact with a surface and to manipulate objects. Advancements are important in society as they are made to not only make life easier for those having it difficult but also to better connect us world wide. Referring back to the prosthetic, it will not be long before the line of who can do what will come down and the enigma that people with both their arms and legs and hands and feet are able to perform certain task.
However, advancement in technology not only helps in the medical field but it brings everyone together in the form of the phone. Before, they were nothing but big and boxy and connected to the wall with their one use to make calls. Now, they are much more than that. A phone continuous to serve its purpose to make calls but it now connects us with the world wide web, can detect when we are entering into an unsafe neighbourhood depending the application downloaded, a clock, a reminder, a fitness coach and so much more.
The hate that has arose around phones and teenagers being obsessed with them are forgetting that without a phone, we will no longer have a way to connect immediately to our loved ones to check up on them. Without a phone, we cannot share our experiences or the sights we are seeing with others, forced to keep our passion to ourselves. The phone does pull us away from the real world and into a virtual one, but in that virtual one, the boundary of time zones is seemingly taken down and for that moment, everyone is connected to one another from every parts of the world. A smart phone is convenient for the lack of better words, but with that convenience humans will live having an entire world quite literally in their pocket that they can access to any time of the day they wish to. Although there is a fear that we will become so obsessed and absorbed into the miniature hand held computer, I believe that making connections with others in different continents will only encourage us to look towards that future and help preserve it so that one day, they themselves will be able to travel across the country and see it for themselves. As well as making connections with others, those connections help the younger generation to become aware of what is going on the in the world around them or even in the state next door. Having immediate access to the Internet through the smart phone will lead to more awareness, which will only make for a better and brighter future.
