Technology is already affecting how we are living and interacting presently. In the year 2000, cell phones were beginning to become popular. We went from having phone lines in our homes, to now not having a home phone number. We have become a mobile society. We aren’t tethered to a cord any more. We can stay in touch while we are traveling across the Atlantic ocean mid air. This new world of technology has actually made life so much more convenient that we forget how we survived 10 years ago. Can this be a positive change entirely? I think there are some significant drawbacks to our new era of technology.
I think people have become less social. There is social media, which has expanded our world. We can now turn on our computer and talk to a stranger in Japan in a matter of seconds. We have access to so the world. The problem is that with our inner circles, we are less talkative. We discuss so much about our lives, and share so much about ourselves online that our “followers” don’t have to ask questions. There isn’t any dialog once we connect in person. Why ask questions about my trip when you saw all of the pictures and video footage I posted. Also when we are in each others company, we don’t even have to speak to each other. We can just sit and look at our phones. There is irony in the term social media, because it is actually doing the opposite. Just because I follow you doesn’t make me your friend. In fact, I believe we are more like stalkers; spying on each other. We pop in and look at profiles and leave.
I feel that this is only going to get worse as time progresses. What other basic skill will we forget how to do overtime after technology gives us the option to try it out? We are getting closer to the time where cars that drive themselves are going to take over the roads. My boyfriend and cousin have newer cars that assist them with backing up and parallel parking. Just because the technology is there, doesn’t mean you have to use it. They are forgetting how to be independent. What happens if the technology malfunctions and you can’t rely on it help you? Then what are you going to do? Artificial Intelligence has its advantages, but there is always going to be a downside to it. Once robots become more like humans in the near future, I can assume that they will replace human labor. They won’t need to train a human, when they can input software into a robot and have it ready to perform in 10 seconds. We will become less sensitive to people looking for work. Companies won’t take the time to see potential in people who want to learn a trade. They would rather not waste the time in grooming, when they can just have robot do the job immediately. That’s my fear when it comes to technology. Yes, there are a million reasons why it is a great asset to our lives, but there is one thing that makes me leery. I don’t want us to lose our sensitivity. I don’t want us to become less talkative. I don’t want us to end up becoming what we are creating…robots.
