Within a span of 50 years we have made exponential advancements in technology that were not even fathomable at the time. Even now, new technology that is arising seems like something out of a Michael Bay film and captivates us. We use these technologies on a daily basis and sometimes even take them for advantage. If you think about the I Phone, it is essentially a mini super computer in the palm of our hands. We have endless knowledge at the palm of our hands and yet we use it to look at videos of cats and take selfies. Technology is moving so quickly that we are even using it to replace jobs that we would normally do. This can affect us in two ways. Either drive us to want to achieve a higher education because a lot of these entry level jobs are being replaced by robots; or cause us to be discouraged and become unemployed.
In today’s day and age, many entry level jobs that are normally held for human’s are being replaced by advanced forms of technology. It is creating a deficiency in available jobs and causes unemployment. For example, in the grocery stores many cashiers are being replaced by automated cash registers and Americans are losing out on countless jobs. Usually, when there is a depletion in jobs, it causes people to feel discouraged. People begin to feel as if the world is just not going the way that they want it to and they begin to feel as if the world is out to get them. They lose the desire to go out and search for jobs and eventually give up and just become unemployed. This also includes jobs that used to be in high demand such as manufacturing and warehousing. In factories like Pepsi factories, they used to have jobs where workers would put the labels on the soda and screw on the caps to the soda bottles. Yes, these types of jobs are very basic and arguably pointless but it still generates a demand of work. These allow tax dollars to circulate in the economy and effect the country on a positive note.
The repercussions are not always negative. This loss in jobs can cause a motivation in the people to want to achieve a higher education. People who are relying on these entry level jobs will see they are being replaced in an effect to achieve higher efficiency in the workplace. In an effort to be able to acquire a job they will need to achieve a higher education to be able to acquire a job in today’s job market. In order to be able to compete in today’s job market you need some sort of degree and people realize this.
We have become so mesmerized by how fast technology is advancing and have failed to recognize the repercussions that can come from these innovative technologies. We need to take a step back and keep in mind how technology will affect our lives in the future.
